Marsworks and Filamentives Greener Gartnership

By Maryam Ali

The UK’s leading sustainable materials brand, Filament, is sponsoring Marsworks.

The company churns renewable materials such as PLA and recycled filament for 3D printing.

The post-industrial recycled material would otherwise go to the landfill if not reused during its production.

The Filamentive Team said: “MarsWorks sounds like a fantastic endeavour, and we love to support STEM projects like this!

In 2019, Plastic Atlas reported that 90% of plastic produced is from non-renewable resources.

At Marsworks, we are committed to using only the highest-quality materials and eco-friendly filaments for our rovers.

All the filaments sold by the company comply with the highest chemical safety standards, mainly set out by the European regulatory framework RoHS and REACH.

Our organisation is conscious of the University of Sheffield’s message towards the transition to a sustainable future.

Max Astle, 20, Operations Team Lead said: “This is a big step for us in the MarsWork team as that’s not only lets us have access to the highest quality filaments but also gets us to be one step closer in our net zero carbon emissions goal, not only for the university of Sheffield and for own personal targets, by partnering with such a sustainable company as of current we see that 99% of the filament market is non-recycled."

We have plans to use the filament in multiple aspects, such as in our wheels, so that we can traverse in the most efficient way possible and survive the conditions of a realistic Martian terrain in our competitions.

It will also be in our robotic arm, where we need tough and resilient filament to withstand the heat and pressure of the gears running at high RPM and high torque.”

Ultimately, our new partnership with Filament is rooted in a shared sustainability vision and desire to make our rovers green as we get competition-ready!
